Subject:I ran a half marathon & we're buying a house!
Time:07:52 pm
Current Mood:happyhappy
On Sunday, I ran my first half marathon - the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, in honor of the 1995 bombing.  I haven't been able to run for about two months because of a stress fracture in my shin, so I really didn't know how it would go, or if I could even start it.  The first ten miles weren't bad, but the last two were horrible.  I simply ran out of energy - I'm sure it was because I wasn't in good enough shape.  But I finished in 2 hours and 53 minutes - not near what I had hoped, but I'm just glad I was able to finish!  The recovery has been so much worse than I imagined, however.  I could barely walk Sunday and Monday, and I'm not doing much better today.  Every muscle in my body hurts, even my shoulders and stomach!

We have also decided to buy a house.  We are paying so much already in rent, that we might as well buy a house.  We put an offer in on one today, but we haven't heard if they've accepted it.  George loves the house, but I am a little more... nervous, I guess?  If we don't get this one, it wasn't meant to be and we'll simply continue looking.

Subject:Finally, jeans that fit
Time:06:06 pm
Current Mood:satisfiedsatisfied

Down by another 5 lbs and decided I could not put off buying new jeans any longer.  I am at my lowest weight in approximately 4 years, and I think I'm only 10 or 15 lbs away from my weight when I got married.

I absolutely hate shopping for jeans.  I am short with a large butt and small waist - apparently I have the largest ass known to mankind because I have never found a pair of jeans with enough room in the butt.

I shopped for a total of 6 hours before I finally wandered, dejected, demoralized, and sweaty, into Coldwater Creek.  Definitely aimed towards older women, but their jeans fit!  Almost no gap in the back of the waist, and I won't need a belt at all!

And the best part is, I have gone from a size 18-20 down to an 8.

Subject:The new job

So I've been at the oil and gas company for a little over a month now.  I like it.  It has a nice atmosphere and lots of perks and benefits.  The amount of money they spend is mind-boggling.  I work with a really nice group of people and everyone gets along well.  My one complaint is that I am not very busy.  Actually, I do very little work.  I beg and beg for stuff to do, but there just any any work.  They keep promising it will pick up.

George has an enlarged liver, and he had to have a liver biopsy two weeks ago.  Luckily, he "only" has fatty liver, but at least it isn't the twenty other, much more nasty things it could have been.  The doctor put him on a very strict diet and said he needs to lose about 60-70 pounds pronto.  Which means I also have gone on a diet.  We definitely splurge every now and then and have not completely denied ourselves, but we have started working out (4-5 times a week) and almost completely cut out eating fast food, etc.  In three weeks, I have lost about 7 pounds, so I feel pretty good.  I want to lose another 10 or so by the time Thanksgiving (and our 5 year anniversary) rolls around.

I had about one month's lapse in insurance coverage, so I was out of my daily meds for about 2 or 3 weeks.  It was really hard coming off of the Lexapro, especially since it was essentially cold turkey and I had been taking it for quite some time.  For about a week, I would get lightheaded, my heart would race or flutter.  I just felt very bizarre.  But once that week was over, I felt absolutely great.  I have so much more energy now, it is amazing.  I am a little grumpier sometimes, I have to consciously keep myself from stressing out over little things, but I feel like it is worth it.  During this time period, I did discover I could not survive without my allergy meds, however.

I've gotten the promotion!  I am now the accounting supervisor!

Someone had started today in that position, but she is a really really bad fit.  She is getting let go of tomorrow & they offered me the position this afternoon.

We still have to negotiate salary, but I am very excited!

This was supposed to have been posted yesterday but didn't...

The accounting manager (my direct supervisor) put her two weeks in yesterday.  I told the general manager and the owner that I want the position.  The GM seems pretty excited about me taking that position, but I feel like I only got a lukewarm response from the owner.  I am supposed to bring in my resume tomorrow.

I don't really have the accounting background, but I feel like I could do well at that job.  I already understand the business and how it runs and I know the software pretty well.  The owner doesn't like to pay his people very well, but it would still be a step up for me and it would be great experience.

Hopefully tomorrow I will have some news.  I am really nervous.  I don't want them to bring someone from outside.  The owner isn't willing to pay enough to get someone who knows what they are doing, and I don't get paid enough to train my boss.

Subject:No grad school & we’re moving!
Time:04:21 pm
Current Mood:excitedexcited

I was accepted into University of Washington and Indiana University at Bloomington, but I didn’t get any funding.  Both places said funding would be a possibility for the next year, but I am not willing to take a chance (or lay out the kind of cash it would require for even that first year).

On Sunday, we rented a house.  It happened kind of by accident – we weren’t looking to move in the next several months.  But this cute little dollhouse has been completely remodeled and I fell in love with it.  It is three bedrooms with one bathroom (and a small one, unfortunately).  It has new carpet, new plumbing fixtures, new heat & AC, new hot water heater, two car garage with a garage door opener, new dishwasher.  The cabinets and countertops have just been installed and he is putting in a refrigerator, stove and washer and dryer.  I am amazed – I have never heard of a rental house coming with a fridge, washer, & dryer.  We also have a small storage shed in the backyard and several trees on the property.  There is an alarm system.

I am not crazy (okay, I’m really really nervous) about the area it is in.  It is an older part of town and is heavily Hispanic, which is a big change for be – I grew up in white suburbia.  I haven’t seen any gang tags or anything, so I don’t think it will be dangerous just different from what I am used to.  We also have an older couple living behind us (they actually went to school with my grandfather) and are admitted “nosey neighbors,” which is just fine with us.

We start moving in on May 11th.  I can’t wait to get out of our apartment!

Bloomington accepted me!  Yay!  My first acceptance!  It is to the East Asian Languages and Cultures Department for a masters in Chinese cultural studies.  But no mention of financial aid.  I need to call them and see if masters students are funded.

The history department for the U of Washington doesn't think I would be a good fit, but they have transferred my application to the International and Area Studies department.

This has been a lazy weekend.  I've played around all day.  I will have to leave the apartment in a little though...  I'm hungry, there is no food in the apartment, and we are on our last roll of toilet paper.  Not a good situation.

I heard back already from the University of Oregon.  I did not get in.  They had 130 applicants for 10 spots.  I'm not that disapointed really.  I am having serious doubts about grad school again, and the thought of just buying a house and settling down keeps looking more and more appealing.

Subject:A lot of changes

I have been at my new job for a little over a month now.   I really like it.  The people are awesome and the work makes the day go by quickly.  I love having my weekends off!  It feels so strange to be working only Monday through Friday, but I get so much more done.

We spent this weekend looking at houses.  We aren't near ready to buy, but we wanted to see what was available.  I want an older house that we could remodel and fix up, George wants a brand new house.  I don't want to spend more than about $80-90,000.  The monthly payments wouldn't be that much, we wouldn't have to watch every penny, and we could still afford to go on vacations, etc.  The houses George wants are mostly in the $125-150,000 range.  I'm just not comfortable committing to that much monthly payment.

At any rate, we won't be making a decision until summer at the absolute earliest.  We want to get our credit cards and such paid off first, and there is no reason to rush into it.
